Notes:

Established in 1883, by J E Kingsbury, as an agency of Western Electric Co of USA to sell telephone and telegraph equipment, including exchanges, in Britain. Started to manufacture cable and equipment from 1898 and incorporated 1910 as Western Electric Ltd. Acquired by ITT [International Telephone & Telegraph] of USA in 1925 and renamed Standard Telephones & Cables Ltd. Post war became a leader in development / manufacture of broad range of telecommunication, radio and television transmission equipment including optical link fibre cable. 1970 acquired Submarine Cables Ltd. ITT disposed of most of its shareholding by 1982 by when the latter was a public company. In 1980s STC acquired ICL Plc and in 1991 was itself acquired by and subsumed into Northern Telecom [Nortel]. Sometime had major plant at New Southgate, London; Southampton; Woolwich; etc.
