Traced origins to 1829 when Joel Spiller established himself as a corn dealer at Bridgwater, Somerset, c1840, with Samuel Brown, established a steam grain mill at Bridgwater and shortly afterwards erected a larger mill at Cardiff followed by a biscuit factory. Business relocated to Cardiff in 1860. Thereafter expanded rapidly through construction or acquisition of other port mills beginning with purchase of William Baker & Son of Bristol in 1891. Incorporated as a public company in 1887. 1890s diversified into dog food, animal feed, bird seed, poultry farming, etc. Soon afterwards operated coastal shipping/lighterage fleet and insurance companies. 1920s acquired several leading milling businesses, including Vernon & Sons Ltd who owned Millennium Mills at Silvertown, London, and reorganised under Spillers Milling & Associated Industries Ltd, later Spillers Ltd. 1938 diversified into baking. After many other acquisitions, in 1972 grain milling, animal feed and baking interests merged with those of Co-operative Wholesale Society and J Lyons & Co Ltd to form Spillers French Holdings Ltd.1978 withdrew from baking. 1979 acquired by Dalgety Ltd
