Formed through the merger of the Birmingham Canal Co, built 1768-72 to link Birmingham with the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, and the Birmingham Fazeley Canal Co, opened 1784, which linked Birmingham with Tamworth. The two merged almost immediately as Birmingham & Birmingham & Fazeley Canal Co, renamed in 1794 Birmingham Canal Navigations Co. Grew by acquisition to control at its peak 160 miles of canal in the Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Black Country conurbations. Nationalised 1948
