Thomas Sopwith, 1803-79, was a land and mine surveyor and civil and mining engineer. Connected for long with T & J Sopwith, leading cabinet makers at Newcastle, established by his father. Alongside this, his surveying work came to embrace railways, roads, mines, minerals, etc, much of it in the Newcastle area where he came to have an office. In early 1820s he was in partnership with Joseph Dickinson of Alston, involved in surveying Alston Moor mines. Survey for many railway companies and minerals in the Forest of Dean. From 1845 managed the important lead mining business, W B Co, and its associated estate at Allenheads for the powerful W B Beaumont - later Viscount Allendale - but also undertook general consultancy work and for this sometime had a London base. Retired 1871. His son was Thomas Sopwith, junior, 1838-98, also a mining engineer, was also closely associated with W B Beaumont and his father [2024]
