Traced origins to 1771 when formed as an informal grouping of leading civil engineers of whom John Smeaton was the most prominent. It was the first such grouping in the UK and in due course was overshadowed by Institution of Civil Engineers formed in 1818. From early 19th century increasingly referred to as Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers. Continues
