Traced origins to 1837 when Alfred Bird, d1879, established himself in business at Birmingham as an experimental chemist. Soon developed Bird's Baking Powder and Bird's Custard Powder and, later, other innovative food products. Promoted them through innovative brand advertising. 1867 renamed Alfred Bird & Sons. Incorporated 1900 when a major business. 1917 acquired J B Dring & Co Ltd manufacturers, inter alia, of dried peas. 1946 linked with General Foods Corp of USA to make and sell its products in UK including Maxwell House coffee and Grape Nuts breakfast cerials 1947 acquired by GFC. Early 1960s relocated to Banbury. 1967 renamed General Foods Ltd when produced a wide range of prepared foods
