Traced origins to Thomas Smith who established at Aston, Birmingham, in early 1880s a metal forging/stamping business making bolts and chain parts and, soon after, bicycle parts. 1887 incorporated as Thomas Smith's Stamping Works Ltd and opened second plant at Coventry where made a much wider range of forgings, in due course for motor industry (especially London buses), aircraft production, Admiralty, etc. 1897 acquired J & W Marshall & Co Ltd, Smethwick, steel manufacturers. 1929 acquired Clayton Forge at Lincoln from failed business of Clayton & Shuttleworth Ltd and renamed it Smith Clayton Forge Ltd. 1937 business renamed Smith's Stamping Works (Coventry) Ltd. 1963 acquired by Guest Keen & Nettlefold Ltd (GKN)
