Notes:

Traced origins to 1775 when established by John Smith, 1728-84, ironmaster and merchant of Sheffield, and others as John Smith & Co. Acquired ironworks and foundry at Brampton, Chesterfield, soon known as Cannon Mills. Renamed in 1784 John & Ebenezer Smith & Co. Supplied by Smith family's coal and ironstone mines; they also owned other ironworks at Adelphi Works, Duckmanton, Calow Ironworks and Griffin Iron Foundry at Manchester. Early output included cannon, cannon balls, parts for steam engines, stoves, cooking ranges, iron columns for buildings, etc, etc. Following Ebenezer Smith's death in 1827 assets sold by end of 1830s
