Established by John Smedley, 1803-74, a hosiery manufacturer at Lea Mills, near Cromford Bridge, whose business was later known as John Smedley Ltd. A parallel interest of his was hydrotherapy. 1853 he acquired a small hydro at Matlock Bank and gradually expanded it. Sometime known as Mr Smedley's Hydrographic Establisment. Rebuilt 1867. 1875 incorporated as Smedley Hydropathic Co Ltd. Further extensions 1880s. Emerged as the leading hydropathic centre in Europe. Closed in 1950s
