John Smeaton, 1724-92, established himself in London in 1748 as a maker of philosophical instruments. From early 1750s increasingly engaged as a consulting civil engineer and emerged as the most distinguished of his generation. Designed lighthouses, river navigations, canals, harbours, mills, etc. Projects included Eddystone Lighthouse, Calder Navigation, St Ives harbour, bridges at Perth and Coldstream, etc, etc. Important for his improvements to waterwheels and water power technology from 1750s. From early 1760s located principally at his family's home at Whitkirk, Leeds
