Traced origins to 1960s when (Sir) Clive Sinclair, b1940, established Sinclair Radionics Ltd, relocating to Cambridge in 1967. Developed a series of groundbreaking inventions - most notably pocket calculators in 1972, Matchbox Radio in 1974, Microvision pocket television in 1977, personal computers from 1980. His businesses were variously known as Sinclair Instruments Ltd, Science of Cambridge Ltd, Sinclair Computers Ltd and, latterly, Sinclair Research Ltd. 1983 established Sinclair Vehicles Ltd to develop his C5 electric vehicle, manufactured by Hoover. The business collapsed in 1985. Sinclair Research continued. Its computer assets were sold to Amstrad 1986. Subsequently a research and development business but enjoyed limited economic success.
