Traced origins to Simpson & Bibby, steam road vehicle builders of Horsehay, Shropshire. Acquired in 1903 by Alley & MacLellan of Glasgow, makers of steam engines and associated components, which used the Sentinel brand. 1915 the Shropshire business was reorganised as Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd, when Shrewsbury based, and again in 1920 as Sentinel Waggon Works (1921) Ltd. Made steam road vehicles, the output of which declined greatly in the 1930s, and railway locomotives. 1941 acquired by Metal Industries Ltd and in 1947 known as Sentinel (Shrewsbury) Ltd when made diesel lorries and buses / coaches until 1956. This business was in decline in the 1950s and was acquired by Roll-Royce Ltd in 1956 to make diesel engines [2024]
