Robert Sangster, 1936-2004, joined his family's firm, the football pools and betting business, Vernons, in the late 1950s and was chairman of the Vernons Organisation from 1980-88 when he sold it to Ladbroke. He was better known for his ownership and training of racehorses and, more particularly, for his interests in horse breeding from 1975. Then he established a hugely successful partnership with Vincent O'Brien and John Magnier to breed high class thoroughbred colts. His interests in decline in 1980s requiring the sale of Vernons
