Notes:

Sir Henry Bessemer, 1813-98, was primarily an inventor; in late 1850s he developed a process which produced 'mild steel' which had very wide industrial uses and came to dominate in UK output. In this he was assisted by the inventions of Robert Mushet with whom he was subsequently in dispute over recognition of his input. Established Henry Bessemer & Co at Sheffield to trial his invention and thereafter sold licences for its use in Britain, United States, etc
