Notes:

Traced origins to Christian Salvesen, 1827-1911, who came to Leith from Norway in 1851 and established a shipping and shipbroking business - Christian Salvesen & Co - in 1872. He had formerly worked at Leith as a shipbroker with George V Turnbull in Turnbull, Salvesen & Co; that firm had also been engaged in timber and coal trading and in paraffin production in Norway. 1891 diversified into whaling and by 1914 world's largest whaler. By 1909 this activity was focused on the South Atlantic and the South Georgia Co was founded. Gave up whaling 1963 and in 1950s moved into cold storage and associated refrigerated haulage/distribution which drove business in 1970s and 80s. Shipping interests disposed of 1980s/90s. Floated 1985. 2007 acquired by Norbert Dentressangle when a major European food distribution business
