John S Russell, 1808-82, inter alia, naval architect and shipbuilder. Innovative designer of ships from 1830s notably with egard wave resistance to movement. From 1838 manager of Caird & Co's engine works at Greenock. Relocated to London in mid-1840s where, inter alia, from late 1840s with partners took over the Millwall shipyard established by William Fairbairn. He controlled it from 1851 when known as J Scott Russell & Co. Undertook pioneering work in construction of steam ships, often working with I K Brunel and culminating in the construction of the 'Great Eastern' steamship in the mid-1850s which caused his business to fail. The Millwall Yard was subsequently acquired by Millwall Ironworks & Shipbuilding Co Ltd. Thereafter Russell resumed naval architecture practice. In his early days also involved in design and construction of steam road vehicles [2024]
