Notes:

Charles Roe, 1715-81, was a leading industrialist from the mid 18th century. Started business in c1740s by opening important silk throwing mills at Macclesfield. By 1750 in partnership with Samuel Lankford, silk merchant, as Roe & Lankford. Later joined by John Robinson and William Stafford. Subsequently Roe withdrew from this business which became Lankford, Robinson & Stafford; it was bankrupt 1773. In 1750s Roe diversified into copper mining at Coniston in Cumbria and at Alderley Edge, Macclesfield, and later Mona Mine, Parys Mountain, Amlwch, Anglesey; into copper smelting at Macclesfield from 1758; and into brass and copper works near Congleton from 1763. Gave up silk interests in 1760s. Early on operated as Charles Roe & Copper Co and in 1774 as Macclesfield Copper Co. Also canal interests. On his death business carried forward by his son, William, 1747-1827
