Traced origins to Michael Rochford, 1819-1883 who was in business at Tottenham, London, by 1857 as a gardener and florist, specialising in grapes and fruit. His son, Thomas, 1849-1901, started as a market gardener at Northumberland Park in 1882, subsequently moving to Turnford. By 1900 growing plants and grapes in 22 acres of glasshouses. 1901 incorporated as Thomas Rochford & Sons Ltd. Michael's other sons were also extensive plant growers in Lea Valley. On Thomas's death, business developed by his brother Joseph. Became one of world's largest plant growers
