Notes:

Richard Roberts, 1789-1864, set up in business in Manchester in 1816 to design and make gear cutting machines, lathes and planing machines. Later gas meters, textile making machinery, clockwork, locomotives, etc. Emerged as a leading designer and maker of machine tools. In partnership with Thomas Sharp, 1823-41, later with Benjamin Fothergill and R G Dobinson. 1860 gave up manufacturing to become a consulting engineer in which role he moved to London in 1860
