Traced origins to 1830s when established by Thomas Richardson, 1793-1850, as T Richardson & Co. Emerged as a world leading producer of marine engines. In 1900 as Thomas Richardson & Sons Ltd merged with Sir Christopher Furness, Westgarth & Co Ltd and William Allan & Co Ltd to form Richardson, Westgarth & Co Ltd. Built marine engines including, from 1912, diesel engines. 1938 at the centre of another merger of marine engine builders. Subsequently acquired other businesses including Humber Graving Dock & Engineering Co Ltd, 1956, and Parsons Marine Turbine Co Ltd, 1957. Certain businesses nationalised as part of British Shipbuilders, 1977. Emerged with a variety of industrial interests, especially steel stockholding. As such was acquired by Klockner & Co, 2000
