Traced origins to c1802. Early on operated as manufacturing ironmongers and providers of structural ironwork for bridges, etc, at Edinburgh and Leith under J S Brown and John Redpath. From c1870s led by (Sir) John Cowan, 1844-1929, who greatly developed the structural metal fabrication and erection business. Incorporated 1896 following which the ironmongery business was sold and boiler building taken up although this was subsequently disposed of. 1903 opened additional works at Greenwich, London, as structural metalwork activities spread nationwide. Early 1920s acquired by Bolckow Vaughan & Co Ltd which in 1929 was acquired by Dorman Long & Co Ltd. By 1970, when owned by British Steel Corp, formed their Constructional Engineering Division trading as Redpath Dorman Long Ltd. Later owned by Trafalgar House Plc
