Traced origins to (Sir) John W Benn, 1850-1922, who began publishing the trade magazine, the 'Cabinet Maker', in 1880 as J W Benn at Finsbury Square. 1885 known as J W Benn & Brothers and incorporated as Benn Brothers Ltd in 1897. Developed into a major publisher of trade journals, eg 'Gas World' and its associated book publishing activities, and the 'Electrician', both acquired in 1917. 20th century business developed in particular by (Sir) Ernest J P Benn, 1875-1954, notably also publishing trade directories and technical books. 1923 founded Ernest Benn Ltd to develop book publishing business and recruited Victor Gollancz between 1921-27, to manage it. 1926 acquired T Fisher Unwin and its large fiction list. Business moved to Tonbridge from c1960s. Benn Brothers acquired by Extel Group 1983. NB the Benn family were noted for their radical political positions [both right and left] and several books cover this aspect of their lives but are not recorded in BHE [2023]
