Traced origins to Raphael Raphael, 1763-1845, an Amsterdam merchant who settled in London in c1799 when he traded as Raphael & Joseph, later known as R Raphael & Sons. In the mid 19th century emerged as 'stockbrokers, foreign bankers and bullion brokers'. Under Harry L Raphael, 1832-99, the business became a leading London merchant bank, a specialisation being the issue of US railway bonds and bonds of European governments. Facilitated by overseas branches - Hamburg, Paris, New York, etc. In decline from the 1880s and much so after 1914-18. Continued as stockbrokers and bankers, the two functions being separated in 1974 and the bank - R Raphael & Sons Ltd - sold off in 1983 when the business continued as brokers, Raphael Zorn
