Notes:

David Bellhouse, 1764-1840, started in business in 1780s and emerged as a leading Manchester builder, constructing housing, factories, public buildings, etc, and acquiring associated activities such as those of timber merchant by 1813, iron founder by 1815 , barge owner by 1824, etc. Also had interests in cotton spinning. From c1820s his sons began to develop the business, each taking over a particular function. From these developed E T Bellhouse & Co, engineers and ironfounders which made a wide range of machinery and prefabricated iron buildings; John & William Bellhouse Ltd, timber merchants; and James & Wainwright Bellhouse Ltd, cotton spinners.
