John Bell, 1745-1831, was a leading figure in the book trades. Established c1769 as a bookseller at the 'British Library' bookshop and soon bookseller to Prince of Wales. Later publisher of cheap literature and of newspapers. Was, inter alia, a founder of the Morning Post in 1772 and publisher of Bell's Weekly Messenger, 1796-1819. Agent for Edinburgh based Apollo Press which he purchased in 1806. 1780s established a typefounding business, British Letter Foundry
