Notes:
Traced origins to the calico printing business of James Greenway which was established at Darwen in 1776. John Potter joined as partner in c1808 and subsequently traded as Potter & Maude. In late 1830s his son experimented successfully in adapting calico printing machinery to the production of wallpaper and started wallpaper production as C H & E Potter. Soon after started papermaking and, briefly, carpet making. From 1853 known as C E & J G Potter and from 1857 as C & J G Potter. 1864 acquired services of leading wallpaper designer James Huntingdon and his studio. 1899 merged with several competitors to form the Wall Paper Manufacturers Ltd but continued as an identifiable unit
