Late 1860s received right to acquire inland telegraph companies and a monopoly of inland telegraphy. 1912 acquired national telephone network as a result of take over of National Telephone Co Ltd. 1969 assets transferred to Post Office Corp which in 1981 was split into Post Office and British Telecommunications Corp, the latter being privatised in 1984. Post Office Corp - which included Royal Mail, parcel services, Girobank and Post Offices - became Royal Mail Holdings in 2001
