Traced origins to 1850s when John Player, d1884, arrived at Nottingham and began tobacco retailing in 1860s; he was also an agricultural agent. In 1877 he acquired an existing tobacco products business in Nottingham and started to make cigarettes and associated packaging. Made innovative use of brands and advertising. Early 1880s opened major new complex at Radford for making tobacco products and lace, the latter being let in tenants. Incorporated 1895. 1901 merged into Imperial Tobacco Co (Great Britain & Ireland) Ltd but retained identity.
