Samuel O Beeton, 1831-77, established himself in publishing in c1852 in partnership with Charles H Clarke as Clarke, Beeton & Co. Published, inter alia, magazines for emerging middle classes as well as fiction as a medium for social improvement. Enjoyed early success with Harriet B Stowe, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. Partnership dissolved 1855 when continued as S O Beeton, especially publishing magazines. Worked closely with his wife, Isabella Mary Beeton ['Mrs Beeton'], 1836-65, in writing and publishing many works on household management, etc, including 'Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management'. Sold business to Ward, Lock & Tyler in mid 1860s following loses incurred at time of failure of Overend Gurney & Co. Briefly resumed 1875-76 [2023]
