Established by John Penn, 1770-1843, in 1799 as an agricultural and general engineering and when made, inter alia, millwork, agricultural implements, cranes, threadmills, etc. Built first marine steam engine in 1820s and emerged as a leading London mechanical engineering business. Early on known as John Penn & Son. A leading supplier to Royal Navy from 1840s. 1872 known as John Penn & Sons and incorporated 1889 as John Penn & Sons Ltd. 1899 amalgamated with Thames Iron Works & Shipbuilding Co Ltd and closed in 1912
