Established, and incorporated as Peek Frean & Co Ltd, in 1857 at Dockhead, Bermondsey, by James Peek, 1800-79, sometime a partner in Peek Brothers & Co, tea, coffee and spice dealers of London, and by his niece's husband, George H Frean of Devon, a miller and baker of ship's biscuits. From the start operated on a substantial scale. After 1870 focused on fancy biscuits. Rebuilt factory on a large scale in 1866 with financial support of Carr family, biscuit makers of Carlisle. Sometime also started to make cake products. Reorganised 1901 as a public company. From 1920s developed manufacturing overseas. 1921 merged with Huntley & Palmers Ltd as Associated Biscuit Manufacturers Ltd but continued to trade separately. 1969 its biscuit division was reorganised as Associated Biscuits Ltd. Acquired by Nabisco of USA in 1980s [2023]
