Traced origins to David Bruce Peebles, 1826-99, who in 1866 established D Bruce Peebles & Co, a gas engineering business at Edinburgh. Relocated to larger works at Bonnington in 1877. 1897 diversified into electrical engineering which in due course became the business's major activity and for which it gained an international reputation. As such it made transformers for power stations, electrical equipment for railways and heavy electrical motors, especially for locomotives. 1969 acquired by Reyrolle Parsons Ltd and latterly owned by Rolls-Royce until closed shortly after 2000
