Developed as a centre of industrial development from shortly before the First World War, the area benefitting in particular from good communications, especially rail and road. Development quickened after 1918 and by 1952 covered 335 acres, growing to 1,290 acres by 1971 when it accommodated 500 businesses. Thereafter in decline. Accommodated in particular small businesses but there were some large ones including Arthur Guinness Son & Co Ltd, United Biscuits Ltd, Lancashire Dynamo & Crypto, H J Heinz & Co Ltd, Park Royal Vehicles, Waterlow & Son Ltd and so on. The area is spread across the London Boroughs of Brent and Ealing. A major developer of the area was Allnatt (London) Ltd which built industrial units from the early 1930s
