Established by (Sir) Charles M Palmer, 1822-1907, and his brother George in 1852 as Palmer Bros & Co to build iron ships in which it was a pioneer in the North East. Noted for building iron colliers - C M Palmer already had substantial coal extraction interests in association with the Bowes family - and by the mid 1850s also warships and later passenger liners, oil tankers, etc. From mid 1850s developed as an integrated business with extensive iron production, iron ore extraction and marine engine interests. Floated 1865 as Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Co Ltd. By 1880s Britain's largest shipbuilder. In receivership 1933 when acquired by National Shipbuilders Security Ltd and Jarrow yards closed. Hebburn yard acquired by Vickers Armstrongs Ltd
