Traced origins to George Orton, 1843-1924, a wheelwright and coachbuilder who, in around 1870, started to build gipsey wagons and, later, living wagons, showfronts and rides for travelling showmen. 1875 established Lion Carriage Works. Co-operated from mid 1890s with Charles Spooner, 1871-1939, who had established himself in business, also at Burton, as a fairground equipment manufacturer. Became noted for quality of carved output and emerged as a sector leader. Two businesses merged in 1925 to form George Orton Sons & Spooner Ltd. After 1945 turned increasingly to general engineering and closed in 1977 when focused on mechanical handling equipment
