Established 1865 as a general millwright business by Joseph Oldham. 1870 Joseph Ward joined as partner. c1878 known as Oldham & Son. By 1880s made machinery for local hat making industry. End of 19th century made battery lamps for miners which achieved success in 1910s. 1916 started to make batteries. Subsequently specialised in batteries for wide range of functions, especially motor vehicles from 1920s, but also lamps, radios, submarines, etc. 1947 converted to public company. Latterly owned by Hawker Siddeley Group and later Invensys Plc. Closed c2002
