(Sir) Dudley North, 1641-91, international merchant. In business from 1660s at Smyrna [Izmir], soon after at Constantinople where from 1675 he was in partnership with others. Specialised in providing agency services for London based merchants as well as trading as a merchant. Returned to London 1680s when developed interests, inter alia, in silk manufacture with Jacob Turner and ironfounding with Robert Foley although his international trading activities, especially in woollen cloth exports and silk imports, continued to predominate. Also provided loans to associates. Closely involved in affairs of Levant Company, Russia Company and Royal African Company. Held public office and was an MP
