Established as booksellers in 1843 by Bradley Thomas Batsford, 1821-1904, at Holborn, London. Initially specialised in medicine and latterly in architecture and the arts. Started publishing in the latter areas in 1860s/70s. Business passed to Bradley, Henry and Herbert Batsford in 1902 and subsequently led with success by Harry G Batsford, 1880-1951, who broadened and popularised its list. Late 1940s briefly operated a New York branch. Post 1945 gave up new book retailing but continued second hand until 1960s. Batsford family sold out in 1970s. Imprint continues in 2023 [2023]
