Traced origins to 1750 when established by William Newman as a manufacturer of locks, hinges, buckles, etc, at Wolverhampton. By late 19th century making door knobs, door springs, spring hinges, door chains, window gearing, fire irons, etc. By 1853 known as William Newman & Son and by 1885 known as Sons. 1880 established branch at Birmingham and subsequently closed Wolverhampton factory. From 1890 briefly made bicycles as Unique & Unity Cycle Co. Incorporated 1900. 1970 merged with William Tonks & Sons Ltd of Leeds, established 1789, to form Newman Tonks Ltd
