Traced origins to (Sir) Edward Bates, d1896, a merchant at Bombay who, in 1848, established a sister business at Liverpool to trade in Indian goods. Also did some banking in support of its trading business. By c1850 started shipowning and management. 1870 formed Edward Bates & Sons. Closed Bombay business in 1898 by merging it with another. Sold last sailing ship 1905. c1916 sold shipping interests to Thomas & John Brocklebank Ltd, which Bates' had controlled from c1912. 1918 exchanged interest in Brocklebanks for a 20% holding in Cunard Steamship Co Ltd in which Bates family became important managers. Continued as merchants and private bankers. Severely damaged in 1970s Secondary Banking Crisis
