Traced origins to 1825 and formation in London of New Zealand Co which was to purchase large tracts of land in New Zealand from indigenous people for sale to emigrant settlers. Initially unsuccessful and revived in late 1830s when it merged with the New Zealand Association, formed in 1837 and led by Edward Gibbon Wakefield, 1796-1862, to take forward the scheme.
