Traced origins to 1825 and formation in London of New Zealand Co which was to purchase large tracts of land in New Zealand from indigenous people for sale to emigrant settlers. Initially unsuccessful and revived in late 1830s when it merged with the New Zealand Association, formed in 1837 and led by Edward Gibbon Wakefield, 1796-1862, to take forward the scheme. Despite controversy and British government opposition continued settlement schemes into 1850s despite financial difficulties from early 1840s. Royal charter 1840. Closed late 1850s
