Traced origins to 1765. An informal grouping of leading businessmen and technologists based in Midlands who met periodically and otherwise informally to discuss matters of mutual interest. Had 14 members including notable figures such as Josiah Wedgwood, Matthew Boulton, James Watt, James Keir, Samuel Galton, etc. Ceased 1813, possibly 1791. Referred to as a 'clearing house of ideas'. Revived in recent years
