Established 1777 by William Bass and developed into the largest brewery in Britain by 1877 by his grandson, Michael T Bass. Known as Bass Ratcliffe & Gretton in 1837 and incorporated 1880. Unusually specialised in supplying brewers and free trade rather than selling through tied houses. 1926 merged with Worthington & Co Ltd but the two traded separately. 1961 merged with Mitchells & Butlers Ltd of Birmingham to form Bass, Mitchells & Butlers Ltd. Subsequently merged with Charrington United Breweries Ltd to form Bass Charrington Ltd in 1967
