Traced origins to James Nasmyth, 1808-90, who in 1834 established a machine tool making business in Manchester. At this time variously in partnership with his brother, George, and Holbrook Gaskell. 1836 established works at Patricroft, later known as the Bridgewater Foundry. There made machine tools, steam locomotives and, especially, steam hammers from 1839, the latter being of major importance to the business. Retired 1856 and from mid 1860s firm known as Nasmyth Wilson & Co. Gave up locomotive building in 1930s and wound up 1940
