Traced origins to the substantial canvas, including ship canvas, making business established by the Michael Nairn, 1804-1858. Also supplied canvas to local and distant floorcloth makers. 1840s diversified into making floorcloth with establishment of Scottish Floor Cloth Manufactory. Business substantially developed by (Sir) Michael Nairn, 1838-1915, into a major floorcloth and, from 1870s, linoleum producer. Incorporated 1893. Developed early manufacturing plant in USA and Germany. 1922 acquired Greenwich Inlaid Linoleum Co Ltd of London to become Michael Nairn & Greenwich Ltd. and Fife Linoleum Co Ltd. Subsequently merged with James Williamson & Son Ltd of Lancaster to form Nairn Williamson Ltd which in 1975 was acquired by Unilever Ltd
