Traced origins to 1908 when a city syndicate acquired the patent of A A Lockwood for the extraction of ores by a magnetic process. Murex Magnetic Co Ltd was registered in 1909 to exploit the process largely by establishing pilot plants overseas, eg Australia. Mexico, etc. It was led by H A Green until his death in 1941. In Britain operated from premises in Millwall where development work took place. 1913 reorganised as Murex Co Ltd. 1914-18 established ore processing plant in Britain, notably to produce tungsten / ferro tungsten. Acquired new site at Rainham in 1917 and all ore processing relocated there and metal casting was added. 1919 reorganised as Murex Ltd. From 1920s developed additional activities, notably the production of welding electrodes by Murex Welding Processes Ltd of Walthamstow, later at Waltham Cross. Public company c1930. 1933 commenced production of magnesium, forming with others the Imperial Magnesium Corp Ltd. 1967 acquired by British Oxygen Co Ltd
