Traces origins to 1805 or 1806 when John Bartholomew, 1784-1871, set up in business as an engraver and soon came to specialise in map engraving for publishers. His son, George, 1805-61, was similarly in business from 1826. The family soon emerged as leading Edinburgh map engravers. Under John, 1860-1920, diversified into map and atlas printing and publishing and emerged as a leading publishing house. 1980 sold to Readers Digest Corp and in 1985 sold on to News International Corp where it formed part of HarperCollins
