Traced origins to Monmouthshire Canal Navigation Co established by act of parliament in 1792. Linked Newport to Pontypool and Crumlin, opening from 1796. Shortly after 1800 built horse tramways linking collieries to the canal and was associated with the Sirhowy Tramroad linking to Tredegar. Thereby provided a major transport system in the Western Valley and the Eastern Valley near Newport. In 1848 by additional act of parliament built railway to supplement the canal when renamed Monmouthshire Railway & Canal Co. Railway opened 1852. Carried coal and iron. 1870s acquired by Great Western Railway
