Traces origins to a flax spinning business established by David Scott at Mid Wynch, near Dundee, in 1797. Later known as James Scott & Son Ltd, jute manufacturers, and in 1949 reorganised when owned by Mid Wynd Holding Co Ltd which also owned Dura (Investments) Ltd, a subsidiary holding investment assets. All other business subsequently divested other than Dura which came under management of Baillie Gifford and was subsequently floated as Mid Wynd International Investment Trust Plc
