Established in 1888 by Archibald Barr and William Stroud, both Glasgow University professors, and early on operated as Barr & Stroud Patents. Went on to develop and manufacture their optical equipment inventions, especially their rangefinder and, later submarine periscopes for the Admiralty - by 1914-18 the leading British manufacturer of precision optical instruments for military use. After 1918 diversified into production for civil use - aerial survey instruments, binoculars, cinema projectors, etc. Incorporated 1913. 1977 acquired by Pilkington Brothers Ltd but retained identity. Sometime sold on to Thales Opthronics
